How to ensure success for breastfeeding next baby?

I am hoping to breastfeed when baby arrives (another 6-8 weeks away) and wanted to achieve best chances of success.

Last time around I struggled to BF and had to give up due to a multitude of reasons after approx 2 months. I had very low supply, mastitis, cracks, thrush. I was feeding, expressing ( to both top up baby and to attempt to increase my supplies) and bottle feeding. I had the benefit of advice from clinics and lactation consultants- I even went to full day clinics, seems my technique was ok.
This feeding was probably taking 2 to 2 1/2 hours out of every three hours. so you can imaging how healthy and exhausted I was :(

I am trying to increase my chances of success this time around and wondered if there is anything I can do before the birth to assist and whether anyone has good advice for after...

You can start using Lanisoh before the baby is born and continue afterwards to 'condition' your nipples. This will help a lot with the dryness and cracks and is safe to use while they nurse. Pumping and taking Fenugreek supplements can help too, but pumping is not going to be the same as the baby emptying the breast - the baby not sufficiently draining the breast is probably the cause for mastitis. Also, formula feeding will eventually cause your milk supply to run low because you're essentially replacing nursing sessions - this could also have been the cause for the mastitis.

I would try again because after all, this is a different baby. You know how to get them to latch on, which is key - and you already have some experience, which will help you. I had trouble at first with my son, but with my daughter she latched right on at the hospital and it was totally different. I also didn't have any of the engorgement or mastitis issues with her that I did with my first (three bouts in nine months). As far as thrush, I would definitely call my doctor within the first signs of it, if you suspect it this time around. You might be able to take some probiotic stuff to help balance your amount of 'good bacteria' so that you won't get it this time.

Good luck and congrats!
