Sore Nipples Breastfeeding Newborn
Saturday, August 27th, 2011newborn and baby which is better? breastfeeding question?
My son is 13 days old. We were doing great with breastfeeding but when my milk came in I was so horribly engorged even after nursing. Our latch was perfect until then he couldn't latch on right so I ended up with sore and bruised nipples it didn't hurt to have him latch on or nurse but I still ended up with cracks well 1 and a bruised nipples. So I started pumping every 2 hours even at night. Both breasts together give me 5 ounces and he only eats every 4 or so hours. I went and talked to a lactation consultant after working with me she said that I can continue to pump or I can get a nipple shield and have it teach him how to latch well and then slowly wean him from it before he gets 6 weeks old. Anyway it goes I will have to pump until tomorrow due to some personal stuff. Don't lecture me about nipple confusion because we havent had any problems the shield she gave me won't mess with my supply she said
For the first couple of weeks, my son would only latch on using the nipple shield, because I was so engorged he couldn't even get hold of my nipple. I also pumped and he did fine with bottle feeding. After my severe engorgement went away, he did fine on my breasts until a year old. I don't think either method is 'better' than the other, it just depends on what will be most convenient for you. Don't push aside the idea of using both methods, either.
