5 Ways to Prevent Post Natal Depression

Article from: My Family UK

Despite intense research no one knows why some people suffer from Post Natal Depression and others don't. However, there are some precautions you can take to try to prevent it from hitting you or your partner hard when your baby arrives.

Ways to prevent Post Natal Depression

  • Talk to someone. The best form of prevention is being able to trust, rely and depend on someone else. Whether that is your partner, your mother or your friend, the most important thing about pregnancy and coping with the months afterwards is having someone to tell how you’re feeling and what’s going on in your head.

  • Sleep. Nap when your baby does. Lack of sleep will cause anyone to feel low and unhappy, baby or not. Some parents suffering from PND will experience feelings of resentment as they watch their children sleeping soundly whilst they toss and turn, not getting a wink. If you get as much sleep as your baby does this feeling will be limited. Mothers can pump their breast milk so that Dads can do their share of night feeding, to prevent breaking the baby's sleep pattern.

  • Don't do too much. Whilst you’re pregnant, your body is under extra pressure and is doing everything for two. You simply won’t be able to carry on as you did before- especially during the latter stages. If you’re working, put your feet up at lunch-time aas well as when you get home. Have other people do things for you. If you tire yourself out, you may experience repercussions later.

  • Had it before? It is more likely for you to suffer from PND if you have done so before. Look out for the tell-tale signs and go straight to your GP if you suspect anything. Ask your partner, relatives or friends to keep an eye on you and look for any suspicious  strange behaviour.

  • Prepare. One of the symptoms of PND is lacking feelings of love towards your baby as they cry, keep you awake and make you very tired. However, if you make all precautions to prepare: go to ante natal classes, talk with people who’ve had children recently, work out a schedule that you and your partner can work to and read baby books, you can limit the shock and therefore the chances of developing PND.
